The Emergency Department (ED)
We are a very busy ED and see an average of 280 patients a day. The department consists of the following areas:
- Majors
- Resuscitation
- Minor Injuries
- Paediatrics
- Clinical Decisions Unit
- Emergency Medicine Centre
- Urgent Primary Care GP service
Access to the Department
You will enter the ED either as a ‘walk in’ patient or as an ‘ambulance’ case. Patients will be directed to a cubicle immediately or be given an initial assessment. In either case, staff will aim to see you as quickly as possible but hope you will appreciate that those with life-threatening conditions must be seen immediately. All other patients will experience a wait that will be based upon the severity of their condition or clinical need.
All ‘walk in’ patients will be seen initially by a Clinical Streamer who will direct them to the most appropriate clinician including a patient’s own GP (with an appointment time) or other services such as Leyton Orient Polyclinic.
All patients seen within the ED, including those referred directly by their own GPs following an initial assessment by a nurse will experience one or more of the following:
- Treat and discharge
- Referral to a specialty team, ie, Surgical or Medical
- A number of investigations such as X-ray, blood tests or scanning
- Further assessment and a period of observation

The ED aims to work in partnership with both our patients and their GPs. If you are discharged, we will actively encourage you to make an appointment for a follow-up assessment or advice at your GP practice, especially if a referral to a clinic or out-patients is required.
