Your child has been treated for asthma. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.
A Fact Sheet for Parents
Asthma is common. It affects more than one child in ten, although it is not always recognised. Some people have mild asthma and only need to take treatment if they are wheezy (this treatment is called a reliever). Other children have moderate asthma and need to take treatment every day to control their symptoms (this treatment is called a preventer).
When people have an attack of asthma, they develop swelling of their breathing tubes, which causes wheezing. This swelling needs to be controlled urgently to prevent further deterioration. This can only be done with a short 5-day course of soluble steroids by mouth. These steroids are not associated with long-term side effects.
Make sure you understand your child’s treatment before you leave the department.
What do you do now?
- Return to the Emergency and Urgent Care Centre or see your GP urgently if your child’s asthma deteriorates.
- See your GP within 5 days.
- If you have attended the Emergency and Urgent Care Centre more than four times in the last year an appointment will be made for your child in the Children’s Asthma Clinic (Consultant Dr O’Callaghan).
