Irritable Hip.

Your child has been treated for an Irritable Hip. They have been thoroughly examined and are now fit to be discharged. The following will aid their recovery.

Caring for your Childs Irritable Hip

What is irritable hip?

It is an inflammation of the hip joint; the medical name is transient synovitis. The condition affects boys and girls from the ages of 6 months onwards. It is not usually seen in children over 10 years. The child finds it difficult to walk and may have a limp.

What causes irritable hip?

Irritable hip is caused either by a minor injury to the hip or following a viral infection such as a cough or a cold. Sometimes the cause is unclear.

What is the treatment?

Resting the hip joint is the best treatment. This allows the hip to recover. Regular painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen (depending on your child and any additional medical problems) should be offered to keep your child comfortable.

What are the long term effects?

There are usually no further problems. In a small number of children the irritable hip can sometimes recur. If the symptoms are not settling further investigations may be required.

What investigations may be carried out?

Blood tests are carried out to look for other causes for your child’s joint pain (such as a bacterial infection) if the signs and symptoms do not settle as expected.

Ultrasound scans are sometimes performed to look for a possible fluid collection within the joint known as a joint effusion.

X-rays are taken to look for any bony abnormalities.

Going home

A follow-up appointment to check your child’s progress will be made in the paediatric fracture clinic. This is to ensure that your child’s symptoms are settling. It may take 2–3 weeks for your child to fully recover.

In the meantime, should your child develop a high temperature, develop worsening pain or go off the affected leg altogether, you should return to the Emergency Unit for review.

After a few days, if their symptoms are improving they may return to school/playgroup but contact sporting activities should be restricted for 2 weeks.
