Your wrist injury has been treated with a plaster cast. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
It is very important that while your wrist is in plaster you maintain full movement in your elbow, shoulder and fingers. This will prevent any stiffness and pain which can occur from not using the arm.
Try the following exercises at least twice a day:
- Bend your elbow, bringing your finger-tips to your shoulder (the plaster may stop you getting full range, but go as far as possible)
- Straighten your elbow – you may need to use your good hand to support the weight of the plaster as you let the elbow straighten
- Stretch your arm up into the air as far as possible so that the inside of your arm touches your ear. Use your good arm to take some of the weight and to stretch the shoulder to its full range
- Touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of each of your other fingers in turn
- Curl your fingers down into as tight a fist position as possible, then uncurl to stretch the fingers out so that they become straight
- Spread your fingers and thumb apart as wide as you can
Repeat each of the above exercises 5 times
