Your child has been treated for a Buckle Fracture of the Wrist. They have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid their recovery.
What is a buckle fracture?
Buckle fractures (also known as Torus fractures) is a common injury in children. Children’s bones are softer that adults, making them more likely to kink on one side rather than break all the way through. This type of injury can be thought of as a ‘bone bruise’ and is treated like a bad sprain without the need for a plaster cast.
What is the treatment for a buckle fracture?
- Buckle fractures can be treated with a removable splint
- The splint should be worn at all times for 3 days
- After this it can be removed for bathing or showering but should be worn the remainder of the time for 3 weeks in total (that is night and day)
- After 3 weeks the splint can be removed at home and normal movement encouraged. Keep the splint safe for a few days to make sure there is no further need for it
- Simple painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen (check with a pharmacist or read the enclosed leaflet with the medication to check it is safe to take Ibuprofen as it can interact with other medication and cause gastric irritation, it is not recommended for asthmatics) should be given when needed
- It is ok for your child to attend school or nursery
- All sports, in particular contact sports and rough play should be avoided for a total of 6 weeks to reduce the risk of re-injury to the bruised bone
What follow up will be required?
- No routine follow up is required for these injuries as they heal well with a short period of rest in a splint
- All X-rays are reviewed by the Radiology department. If there is any concern that the injury may be more serious you will be contacted and a fracture clinic referral made
- The wrist may be a little sore and stiff after the splint is removed and your child begins to use it again – this is normal and should settle after a few days
- If the wrist is still significantly swollen or painful after 3 weeks in the splint arrange to see your General Practitioner
