You have been treated for an open wound. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Caring for Wounds
- All injuries are painful, especially the first 24 hours. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help relieve the pain. (Please refer to manufacturer instructions for dosages.)
- If a dressing has been applied, leave this in place for 2 days. It may be necessary to keep the area covered for longer.
- The area should be kept clean and dry until it is healed.
Advice about caring for wound closure strips
- Wound closure strips are sterile surgical strips applied to close a wound.
- After 7 days the strips may begin to lift off and can be gently removed.
Advice when skin glue has been applied to a wound
- Your wound has been closed using LiquiBand Optima skin glue.
- The glue will form a scab on your wound; please do not pick scab off. it will fall off naturally after about 7 days when healing occurs.
- The glue is water resistant. Do keep your wound clean and dry. Light showering and light hair washing is permitted. Ensure the wound is patted dry with a clean towel. Do not immerse your wound in water for long amounts of time.
- If the glue has been put onto a wound on your head please be careful when combing or brushing your hair.
Advice when stitches have been used
- It has been necessary to apply stitches to close the wound. The Doctor or Nurse Practitioner will tell you how long they need to stay in place for
- You will need to make an appointment with your practice nurse or attend an NHS walk-in-centre to have these removed
If there is increased redness, swelling pain or discharge from the wound, or if you have a temperature, please see your GP or return to the Emergency Department.
