Your child has been diagnosed with a viral infection. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.
Advice about Looking after Children with Viral Infections
Your child has been diagnosed with a viral infection. Viral infections are very common in children. Your child may have a high temperature and feel unwell.
The best way to treat your child is to:
- Keep them comfortable by giving them fluids to drink.
- If you think your child is distressed or uncomfortable give them paracetamol and/or ibuprofen. Please refer to manufacturer’s instructions for dosages.
- Ensure that they get lots of rest.
Viral infections are self-limiting and your child should begin to feel better in a few days.
Antibiotics do not kill viruses and are therefore not helpful.
If your child develops new symptoms or is getting worse they should be seen by a Doctor again.
Please bring your child back to the Emergency Department if your child:
- Becomes drowsy or irritable.
- Has fast or difficult breathing.
- Stops drinking or feeding.
- Develops a rash.
- Becomes floppy or has a fit.
- Has a temperature that persists for more than 5 days.
