Your child has been treated for an injury of the wrist. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.
Your child has sustained an injury of the wrist which your Doctor/Emergency Practitioner has diagnosed as a ‘buckle fracture’.
- This injury is treated like a sprain.
- This injury does not result in permanent deformity.
Treatment
- This hospital treats this injury with a splint.
- This splint should be worn day and night for 3 weeks and should be removed for washing and hygiene needs.
- The splint should be removed at 3 weeks.
- Sporting activities, physical education and rough play should be avoided for a further 3 weeks (eg, sports, etc, should be avoided for a total of 6 weeks).
Things to look out for
Your child will have pain in their wrist which will settle over a few days. It may be helpful to ease your child’s discomfort with simple painkillers for example paracetamol or ibuprofen. There may also be minimal swelling of the affected wrist which will settle a few days after the accident.
If pain in the wrist persists beyond 3 weeks then your child should be reviewed in the Emergency Department.
