Your child has been treated for a yellow appearance of the skin and the whites of the eyes. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.
What is Jaundice?
Jaundice is the name given to the yellow appearance of the skin and the whites of the eyes. It is commonly seen in newborn babies, usually developing on the 2nd or 3rd day. In most babies it gradually fades by the 10th day.
Why do some babies remain jaundiced?
- The liver may take longer to work in babies who are born early.
- Breastfed babies may have jaundice longer, though this fades with time and breast feeding can safely continue.
- It may be caused by your baby having an infection or other illness.
- You may have a condition which makes your baby more likely to develop jaundice.
- Your baby may have a poorly functioning thyroid gland.
- Your baby may have a problem with their liver, although this is very rare.
What will happen when I bring my baby to hospital?
- Your baby will be weighed, examined and you will be asked some questions.
- Blood and urine samples will be collected if these have not already been done.
- You will be asked to bring a recent stool specimen with you for examination.
- We will enter the visit into your parent held record (red book) so other professionals involved in your baby’s care are informed.
What happens after my visit?
- We will contact you to let you know the results of your baby’s tests.
- If the results are not within the normal range, we will arrange for you to come back to the hospital, occasionally this may involve referral to a specialist doctor for further investigations.
- We will send a letter to your GP with the final results.
