Your child has been treated and sedative medication was given to reduce your child’s pain. The following instructions will aid their recovery.
Your child has received some medicine called Ketamine.
What is Ketamine?
Sedation is given for procedures to reduce a child’s pain and anxiety and make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The sedation will make your child feel sleepy and relaxed but they may still have their eyes open.
Under Ketamine sedation, your child will be breathing on his/her own. The sedation may cause extra secretions which might cause your child to drool and appear tearful.
A local anaesthetic may be applied to further numb the area during the procedure.
Your child will not usually remember the procedure afterwards.
It is very unusual for this medicine to have any side effects, but if you are worried in any way, please contact the Children’s A&E Department on:
What to look for:
- Occasionally this medicine causes vomiting. Do not worry about this unless it happens more than 2 or 3 times.
- For the first few hours, your child may be a little wobbly on his/her feet. Please bear this in mind and do not let them play unsupervised for 2–3 hours afterwards.
- Very occasionally this medicine can cause nightmares. If this happens, it should not continue for more than one or two nights.
Wound Care
If a dressing has been applied, leave this in place for 2 days. It may be necessary to keep the area covered for longer. The area should be kept clean and dry until it is healed.
If there is increased redness, swelling pain or discharge from the wound, or if your child has a temperature, please see your GP or return to the Children’s Emergency Department.
With any injury, there is always a risk of bruising and scaring. You can massage and moisturise the area to reduce the appearance of a scar.
Pain relief
All injuries are painful. You may give your child paracetamol to help relieve the pain. (Please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for dosages.)
Caring for wound closure strips
Wound closure strips are sterile surgical strips applied to close a wound.
- Do not get them wet!
- The strips should stay on for a minimum of 3 days, try to keep them on for 5 days.
- After 7 days the strips may begin to fall off. If they don’t fall off on their own, you can wet them and gently pull them off at this time.
