Welcome to the Emergency Department -GP Referred Patients.

You may have been sent to the Emergency Department following a telephone conversation or consultation with your GP today. We would like to explain what will happen during your stay in the Emergency Department.

GP Referred Patients

Your GP has spoken to one of the specialists teams here in the hospital and the normal process would be for you to go directly to a bed on the ward.

Unfortunately today the hospital is receiving a high volume of admissions and sadly, there are no available beds at this time.

A nurse will call you shortly, for a brief assessment to understand the reasons why you are here. You may have to answer some questions regarding your visit, we apologise for any inconvenience, however it is important we understand the reason for your visit and how you feel. As this assessment is taking place we will also notify the team that you have arrived.

A member of the team will come and see you as soon as possible, however there may be a delay depending on the number of patients before you, or depending on their condition and whether they require immediate treatment.

Whilst you are sitting in the waiting room other patients may be called through, and you may feel that they have not being waiting as long as you. This is because their clinical condition (illness) dictates that they need to be seen more urgently or that the Emergency Department doctors are seeing them.

The nursing staff may request to take bloods for an ECG (electrocardiogram – a test of the heart) whilst you are waiting and will ensure that you are kept informed of the progress, administer pain relief and answer any questions you may have.

Your bed may become available before you are seen in the Emergency Department. Don’t worry, the specialist team will see you on the ward and we’ll inform them of where you have been transferred to. Sometimes the specialist team will see you in the Emergency Department and either decide to admit you for further tests or feel that you can be safely discharged home.
