Laparoscopic Hernia Repair.

You have had minor surgery in our centre. This kind of operation is planned to be started and finished in a day. We have examined you post-op and feel you are now well enough to go home. Please follow the advice below, it will aid your recovery.

Discharge Instructions Following Your Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Your wounds will be covered with waterproof dressings which may be removed after 5 days.

Your stitches are dissolvable but may take up to 30 days; they do not need to be removed.

You can shower as usual, replacing the dressing if necessary but soaking in the bath is not recommended.

You should take painkillers regularly as instructed to relieve any discomfort.

Some slight swelling and bruising is normal, and this may take up to 4 weeks to resolve.

Place a hand over the wound to support it should you feel the need to cough.

You should refrain from heavy lifting for 4 weeks following your procedure.

You should not drive until you are pain free and can perform an emergency stop.

Sexual activity can resume as soon as you feel comfortable.

If you have one or more of the following symptoms please call number below.

A raised temperature (feeling of hot and cold or shivery).

Discharge from wounds (pus or excessive fluids).

Abdominal pain that does not settle with pain killers given.

Inability to eat a light meal (eg, sandwich and cup of tea).

Inability to walk about the house, even after taking painkillers.

Feeling sick or vomiting.

Feeling faint or palpitations.

Unable to pass urine.

Chest pain or shortness of breath.
