The vast majority of people with mental health problems are treated with medication and therapies such as counselling, relaxation techniques and self help groups.

Most mental health problems seem to occur as a result of events that happen to us and our difficulty in coping with them at the time. The way that others help and respond to the situation can be very important in bringing about recovery.

Who can help?

Most people turn to friends or family when they have a problem, simply talking about your difficulties can prove very effective in combating them.

Where these methods have failed the family doctor may be approached for help, and he/she may refer you for counselling or prescribe some medication.

Specialist services may be sought from Psychiatrists, Psychologists or Community Psychiatric Nurses where other methods have proved ineffective.

What if I need help in an emergency?

You should contact your family doctor first.

If you are worried about the mental health of a relative or friend, the local social services department will provide advice and arrange for an assessment to be carried out if necessary.

If the person is already in contact with the medical health services, you can contact them direct.

If all else fails, help is always at hand at your local Emergency Department.
