You have been treated for a Lower Limb Injury. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Lower Limb Injury (Tubigrip)
A tubigrip bandage has been applied to your ankle and must be worn for as long as it remains painful, or as advised by the doctor/nurse.
You should:
- Rest and elevate the leg 24–48 hours after the injury.
- Apply frozen peas wrapped in a damp towel, to your leg, for 20 mins every hour for 24–48 hours.
- Remove the bandage if your toes become blue, cold, white, numb or you experience ‘pins and needles’. If there is no improvement, seek medical advice.
- Remove the bandage for washing and re-apply as demonstrated by the nurse.
- Take tablets such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to relieve the pain.
- When walking, bend your knee and use a heel to toe action, as demonstrated by the nurse, to avoid limping.
- Use stick/crutches if you have been told to.
- Try to wear sensible shoes and not stand still.
You should not:
- Apply ice-packs directly to your skin.
- Wear the bandage at night.
Exercise
Try to exercise for 10 minutes every hour, especially after you have used ice. This will help to stop your ankle from becoming stiff.
