Suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

You have been treated for a Suspected DVT. You have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid your recovery.

Suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

You have been diagnosed as having a possible DVT.

The blood tests that have been done will be checked at the DVT Clinic – among them are specific tests that can help to tell the clinic staff whether your blood is actively making clots.

Once you have been seen at the DVT Clinic, they will decide if you need an ultrasound scan to confirm whether you have DVT or not.

You will possibly have been given an injection of low molecular weight heparin whilst in the Emergency Department. This makes any potential blood clot soften so that your body can begin to dissolve it. The majority of patients are able to continue these injections at home while waiting for their scan.

A DVT is a blood clot in a vein. There may be no obvious reason why you have formed a clot but certain conditions are known to make you more prone to forming clots, eg, certain illnesses/smoking/dehydration/sitting still for long time/breaking bones/pregnancy/certain medications/family history of clots. This will be discussed during your appointment with the DVT Clinic.

You may take paracetamol for any pain. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen based medications.

Please organise someone to drive you to the hospital for your appointment. You are advised not to drive until recommended by the hospital as driving has the potential to move a clot.

Your body will heal faster if you rest while at home. When sitting or lying down try and elevate the affected limb to help the swelling to go down.

You may eat whatever you like. Try and drink 2 litres of water or soft drinks each day to prevent dehydration.
