RICE Advice.

Your child has been treated for injured limb. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.

Rest

Rest your injury for 2 days. Gradually increase the movement in the injured limb as pain allows after 2 days.

Ice

Use crushed ice or a bag of frozen vegetables to reduce swelling and bruising. Wrap the ice in a cloth before applying to the injured area. Do not apply ice directly onto your skin as it burns. Leave the ice on for 10 minutes only and reapply every 2 hours for the first 2 days.

Compression

Tubigrip bandages have been found to be of little benefit, so we tend not to use them.

Elevation

Elevate your limb as much as possible. Feet and legs to at least the height of your bottom, arms and fingers to the height of your heart. If given a sling, please use it for at least 48 hours.

Exercise

Exercise your injured limb gently and regularly, if you don’t it will get stiff. They should be performed every few hours after application of ice.

Painkillers

Take painkillers regularly. You can buy paracetamol/ co-codamol and ibuprofen over the counter from chemists and supermarkets. Always read the advice in the packet.
