Your child has been treated for Croup. They have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid their recovery.
What is Croup?
Croup is a common respiratory disease which causes swelling to the upper breathing passages. This swelling causes noisy breathing and a barky-sounding cough.
It normally occurs in children between the ages of 3 months and 7 years, and is caused by a virus.
It is most common in the winter months, and often starts after your child has had a cold.
It can be very frightening for both parents and the child.
How will I recognise it?
- A barky-sounding cough.
- A loud noise when your child is breathing in.
- Usually worse at night.
- Your child may be frightened, irritable and distressed.
What treatment will my child need?
- Sitting in a warm, steamy room at home may help.
- Occasionally very cold air can make the cough worse.
- Calpol may be of use.
- Reassure your child.
- Treatment for mild croup is not usually required.
Admission to hospital for observation and/or steroid treatment may be required if your child’s breathing worsens. The signs to watch for include, noisy breathing at rest, increasing restlessness and sucking in of the rib cage when breathing in.
