Patients will be seen on a priority basis. To assess your priority you will be seen by an experienced nurse, called a triage/assessment nurse, who will take a brief history and examine you. The nurse will then place you into a triage category and inform you of your estimated waiting time.
The triage nurse will be your point of contact and you can speak to him/her at any time they are free.
Triage is the sorting of patients into priority for treatment. The National Triage Scale for the UK is from 1 (most urgent) to 4 (standard).
The patient is in need of immediate treatment for preservation of life.
This includes patients who are seriously ill or injured.
If you have walked into the department and are well enough to see the triage nurse, you almost certainly will not be in these categories.
This includes patients with serious problems, but in a stable condition.
This includes most patients who are not in immediate danger or severe distress. Although the injury may not be minor to you, it is the triage/assessment nurse who has to decide if you are placed in this category.
Other patients may appear to have a more minor problem than your own. Often these patients are seen by their general practitioner prior to attending the Emergency Department and have been referred to another specialist and not directly to the Emergency Department.
