You have been treated for a Plaster Cast. You have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Care of Cast Instructions
- Move fingers and toes frequently (that includes the thumb!). This is important to prevent blood clots in the deep veins of your arms and legs.
- Keep the limb elevated until any tendency for fingers/toes to swell has completely subsided. Remove any rings for the duration of time in plaster.
- If allowed to walk on the cast, do not put weight on it for 30 mins if cast is synthetic, 48 hours if it is plaster of paris.
- Do not get cast wet.
- Do not remove the crepe bandage if one has been applied over the cast.
- If the cast breaks down or any undue pressure from any part of it is noticed, report back to the department treating you; if Fracture Clinic between the hours on the front of this card, Emergency Department is 24 hours a day.
- Report back to the Emergency Department immediately if you notice any swelling, pain, bluish discolouration of fingers/toes or pins and needles.
- If you have been supplied with crutches, walking stick, or frame please follow the instructions. When no longer needed please return to the department you got them from.
- Do not put foreign objects of any description inside the cast (that includes talcum powder/deodorant). Please do not paint the cast.
- Please refrain from using nail varnish until the cast is removed.
- If you have a Cast Brace/Dynamic Brace in situ, report back to Fracture Clinic, Orthopaedic Clinic you attended if screws/hinges become loose or broken.
