Thumb and Toe Spica.

Your child has been treated for a Thumb/Toe Injury. They have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid their recovery.

Care Instructions for a Thumb/Toe Spica

Your thumb/toe injury has been treated with an Elastoplast spica support which must be worn for seven to ten days.

The idea of the strapping is to reduce the movement of the thumb/toe and its muscles, so allowing the injury to heal.

If your thumb/toe becomes swollen, blue, cold, white, numb or has a feeling of pins and needles please remove the strapping immediately (this means the strapping can no longer stretch so the blood supply to the thumb/toe is being affected). Removal can be carried out easily by soaking the thumb/toe in a bowl of warm water for a couple of minutes to loosen the strapping, and then peel the strapping off.

The strapping must be kept dry at all times, if it becomes wet it will not be restricting the thumb/toe’s movements.

If your skin develops an irritation/rash where the strapping has been applied remove it immediately and contact the department that applied it. It means you have an allergy to the tape that has been used.

After a few days of rest, attempt to exercise the thumb by touching it to all other fingers in turn regularly, pain permitting. Exercise the toe by clenching and extending the toes.

If you have any worries/concerns then please seek medical advice, either your own GP or your nearest Emergency Department.
