Advice Following a Possible Seizure.

You have been treated for a Possible Seizure. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.

Am I Epileptic?

Epilepsy can only be diagnosed by a specialist, and only if a patient has had more than one definite seizure
It can be hard to tell if a blackout was definitely a seizure
Every person can be caused to have a seizure under certain circumstances.

What Happens in Hospital?

A doctor will ask you some questions, examine you, and perform some tests
This is to find out whether there was any obvious cause for the seizure
Usually no obvious cause is found
You will be allowed home if there is not a cause which needs immediate hospital treatment.

What Happens Now?

You must see your GP within the next two weeks who will usually arrange for you to see a specialist
Take an eye-witness of the possible seizure with you. If this is not possible, try to take their phone number with you, so the GP or specialist can talk to them
Stay with a responsible adult for the next 24 hours.

Until you are seen by the specialist:

Do not drive
Do not engage in dangerous activities such as diving and climbing
Do not go swimming unless someone with you knows that you may black out
Do not lock the door when you are having a bath.
