You have been treated for trichiasis. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Trichiasis is the medical term for ingrowing eye lashes. It is a fairly common condition which mainly affects older people.
Other lid conditions such as blepharitis (inflammation and infection of the lid margin) styes and cysts are often associated with trichiasis.
Trichiasis is a painful condition as the ingrowing lashes rub against the cornea which is the clear front surface of the eye. This may cause corneal abrasion, which in turn can lead to an infection and, more seriously, a corneal ulcer.
Ingrowing lashes should be treated by removing them before these complications arise.
Epilation or removal of lashes using a small pair of tweezers, is available to all patients, without an appointment, in the Casualty Department. This gives almost immediate relief, but is only a temporary measure as the lashes grow again.
Electrolysis and cryotherapy (freezing) and more formal surgery can be arranged through the Outpatients Department by referral from the Eye Unit Casualty Department or your GP.
