Contact lenses must be worn with care. Always follow the instructions and advice of your optician.
Main Points
- Do not wear ‘extended wear’ or ‘disposable’ lenses at night. They do not allow enough oxygen through the cornea (the front of the surface of the eye) to keep it healthy.
- Make sure you visit your optician regularly to have your soft lenses sterilised and checked before reinserting them. If you wear hard contact lenses attend your fitter at the recommended intervals
- Make sure you clean your contact lens case thoroughly and change it regularly as recommended by your optician.
- Always have a pair of glasses for use in an emergency.
- If your eye is sore take your lens out immediately and seek help.
- Having visited the Eye Casualty follow the instructions of the doctor or nurse. If the eye does not improve, please ring the department for further advice.
