You have been treated for a possible fracture to your finger. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
How to care for your fractured elbow
- You have a minor break near the knuckle and it will usually heal within 3–6 weeks and the pain will settle as it does so.
- It may take 6 weeks or longer before your hand returns to normal.
- You will be given a finger splint to wear, this will help the pain and allow early movement
- Wear the splint for 3–4 weeks, less if pain allows.
- As the break is close to the joint, it is important to move your hand/ fingers as soon as possible, so the joint does not become stiff and therefore, reduce movement to your finger.
- Use your hand as normally as possible. This will not cause further damage but heavy lifting may be sore for 6 or 8 weeks.
- Hand grip is generally very good after this type of injury.
- As the bone heals a lump will form at the break site and the knuckle will not be as prominent.
- There will be some shortening expected as a consequence of the injury.
