Many injuries recover without needing medical treatment. This is true even if there is a broken bone. There may be pain and swelling at first, but this is part of the normal healing process. These symptoms should gradually decrease over about two weeks.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic department aim to have your case reviewed by the consultant within 72 hours of referral in order to ensure that your case is triaged. The assessment will be made by the consultant using information from the clinician who saw you first, and any scans that have been done.

There are four possible outcomes following review in the Virtual Fracture Clinic:

You may be referred directly to physiotherapy/hand therapy – the department will contact you with further details
You may be discharged back to the care of your GP with the advice given to you in the MIU
You may be given a face-to-face appointment in the Fracture Clinic – the department will contact you with details of your appointment
On rare occasions, you may be called to come back to the hospital for an urgent review

If you have not had any contact from the Virtual Fracture Clinic within the next 7 working days from your initial visit, please contact the Virtual Fracture Clinic team:

If you have any concerns or your symptoms have worsened, please attend the MIU to seek urgent medical attention.
