As you have risk factors for coronary heart disease and have come to us with chest pain we want to find out if you have coronary artery disease.
Instructions for patients needing stress echocardiogram/exercise testing
With your consent, we are going to perform either a stress echocardiogram or an exercise tolerance test. We perform these tests daily Monday to Friday and some patients attend as inpatients and some as outpatients. The test takes place on Jenner Ward.
If you are getting the test as an outpatient after discharge you will receive a telephone call from a Cardiology doctor who will book the appointment with you and give you the details.
When the test is arranged please do the following.
- On the day of the test take no food for at least 4 hours prior to the test. This reduces the incidence of nausea and vomiting which can occur when the heart is stressed.
- When you come for the test provide a list of all medications you are taking. Ensure the doctor knows about any allergies or reactions to drugs or other agents that you have.
- Omit the following medications on the morning of the test:
– Betablockers, eg, Atenolol, Bisoprolol, Carvedilol, Metoprolol, Nebivolol and Sotalol
– Diltiazem
– Verapamil
Other medication can be taken as normal.
If your blood pressure is very high or your heart rate is very rapid on the day of the test then the test may have to be postponed.
You will have a cannula placed in the left arm for the test.
The procedure may take up to 1 hour to complete and usually takes place during the afternoon.
Please let us know if you are unable to attend on the day as we can fill the place with another patient.
