Opening times are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Certain times can be extremely busy, with longer waiting times for less seriously ill/injured patients. There is no access to the rest of the hospital from A&E.

Should I come to A&E?

Accident and Emergency is a service for those people who are acutely ill, or have a life or limb threatening condition.

There are many alternatives to A&E, the NHS 111 Service can help people decide about which service is most appropriate.

The GP led Urgent Care Centre next to this A&E treats patients with minor illnesses that require urgent medical attention but are not immediately life-threatening.

The Norwich Walk in Centre can be found at Rouen House on Rouen Road, and is open 07.00–21.00 every day including bank holidays.

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit at Mill Road, Cromer, NR27 0BQ which offers an 8 till 8 service every day.

No appointment is necessary and they offer healthcare advice, information and treatment.

Emergencies for A&E include:

Severe chest pain
Shortness of breath
Bleeding profusely
Head injury
Chemical in the eye

On Arrival

On arrival to the department you will be seen in by the primary triage nurse who will determine the nature of your illness/injury, and how urgent it is that you be seen. The primary triage nurse may give you painkillers, if required.

You will then be booked in by the receptionist, who will take basic personal details (name, address etc) and assessed details of your complaint.

Some patients will be sent to have an X-ray, others will wait until they have seen the clinician.

Your Consultation

You will be seen either by an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP), an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP), or a doctor. ACPs and ENPs are registered nurses who have undertaken additional training, which enables them to diagnose, treat and supply or prescribe medication.

You will be advised on self-care if discharged, or it will be explained what is likely to happen if you are to be admitted.

There are a number of areas where you may be seen, each dealing with different complaints, therefore other patients may be called through before you.

Confidentiality is maintained at all times, but please inform the nurse/doctor if you feel you require more privacy.

You may be supplied with medication, which you are required to pay for unless you provide evidence of exemption.

Overseas Visitors

No charge will be made for treatment within the Accident and Emergency Department, although if an outpatient appointment is made or you are admitted then it is necessary to determine liability, therefore you may be asked for documented proof to establish your eligibility for free healthcare treatment.

We offer an interpreting service organised through INTRAN – please tell reception which language you speak and they will arrange the necessary help.

Mobile Phones

We ask you to limit use of mobile phones on wards or keep them on silent to respect other patients who may be resting. Mobile phones can be used in public areas such as corridors and restaurants.

Shops and Food

There are hot drinks and snack machines in the Accident and Emergency Department.

Parking

A range of car park concessions are available for patients and visitors. These include 30 minutes free drop off, free parking for disabled patients and visitors, and for dialysis patients, and reduced charges for patients attending for cancer treatment. The hospital website carries full details of parking concessions.

Tickets are paid for at the ticket payment machines found at the main entrance as well as several exits close to the car parks. Please pay for your ticket before attempting to leave in your car
