Your child has been treated for a Wrist Injury. They have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid their recovery.
What is a buckle injury?
A buckle injury of the wrist is a small area of squashed bone, which usually occurs following a fall onto the outstretched hand.
The affected wrist may be sore, slightly swollen, and painful to move, but the arm does not look bent.
How is it treated?
This injury is treated like a sprain by wearing a special splint which can be removed for bathing or showering. Encourage your child to move their arm and fingers straight away in the splint to prevent stiffness developing.
Pain is usually not severe and should be controllable with a simple pain medicine such as junior paracetamol. Give this, as needed, following the directions on the packet or as directed by your child’s doctor/nurse.
What follow-up is needed?
These injuries heal quickly without problems so follow-up X-rays or appointments are usually not required.
You can remove your child’s splint whenever they are comfortable but it should not be worn for more than 3 weeks following the injury.
Wrist movements may be a little stiff and sore at first. Avoid ‘rough and tumble’ play, and contact sports for 6 weeks to avoid making it worse.

- Your child complains of increasing pain, not controlled by painkillers at the recommended dose
- Your child complains of numbness or tingling/’pins and needles’ of the fingers that does not improve by raising the arm
- You have any other concerns
Using the numbers below, contact the hospital if, after 3 weeks from the injury:
- Your child’s wrist remains very painful or swollen
- Your child will not use their wrist, hand or fingers within 2–3 days of the splint being removed
- You have any other concerns
