You have been given a sling for your injured arm. The following instructions will explain how to re-tie the sling
How to re-tie Broad and High Arm Slings
Broad arm sling
- Support the injured arm. Pass one end of the bandage through at the injured elbow so the base is level with the forearm
- Bring the bandage up over the forearm to meet the other end at the shoulder.
- Tie a reef knot to secure it.
- To make sure the arm is secure and the elbow does not hang from the sling, fold the excess material (the point) forward at the elbow and fasten with a safety pin.
- If you do not have a safety pin, twist the point until the sling fits snugly, then tuck in.
High arm sling
- Support the injured arm across the chest. Fingertips touching the opposite shoulder.
- Drape one end of a triangular bandage over the shoulder
- Ask the casualty to raise his/her elbow. Tuck the base of the bandage under his hand and forearm and behind the elbow.
- Bring the lower end up across the back.
- Tie the ends in a reef knot.
- If you have a safety pin, fold any loose bandage over the point and fasten at the corner.
- If you do not have a safety pin, twist the point until the sling fits snugly, then tuck in.
