Your child has been treated for a Fractured Clavicle. They have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid their recovery.
Fractured Clavicle (Child)
Your child has broken their clavicle. You might hear some people call it a fracture, but that is just a different name for a break.
We have treated it by giving it support, either with a broad arm sling
or a collar and cuff sling.
This helps the bones to line up properly, and your child should be able to move normally again in 7–10 days.
You should:
- Give your child a medicine, such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, to relieve any pain.
- Take the sling off your child’s arm when they go to bed and make sure that they sleep with pillows to prop them up so that they are sitting.
You should not:
- Let your child join in any strenuous games or sports, including swimming.
You will have been given an appointment to return to the fracture clinic to see an orthopaedic doctor.
Please remember
When the break is properly healed, you might be able to feel a small bump where it used to be. This is just where the new bone has grown and should not cause any problems.
