Corneal Abrasion.

You have been treated for a Scratch on the Eye. You have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid your recovery.

Corneal Abrasion

You have a scratch on the cornea, the clear ‘window’ at the front of your eye. The injury is on the surface and is not serious. However it can cause pain because the cornea is very sensitive.

With treatment, this injury usually heals in approximately 24 to 36 hours.

Treatment

During your examination, you may have had some anaesthetic drops put in to numb the cornea and to make the examination less painful. Your eye may remain numb for 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the amount used. Be careful to ensure that nothing goes into your eye as you will not be able to feel it and may cause further damage to the cornea.

The antibiotic ointment you have been given is to lubricate the eye and prevent infection.

Controlling the pain

To control the pain, a regular painkiller such as ibuprofen or paracetamol is suggested. If the pain is severe you will be advised about stronger medications.

You may find that bright lights increase the pain, so try wearing dark glasses and sitting in a dark room; this will make you feel more comfortable. Warmth may also help to relieve the pain. Use a warm hot-water bottle wrapped in a soft towel and hold it to the face on the affected side. Be careful not to burn yourself.
