Diarrhoea and Vomiting (Adult).

You have been treated for Diarrhoea and Vomiting. You have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid your recovery.

Treatment of Diarrhoea or Vomiting

The diarrhoea of enteritis is best treated by resting the bowel, not by the taking of medicines or tablets which may even make it worse. This is done by avoiding all solids, which includes milk, since milk is changed into a solid in the stomach.

You should:

Take only bland fluids, (water, lemon-barley water, orange squash) in copious amounts until the diarrhoea stops and for 24 hours afterwards.

After 24 hours

From 24 hours after the last diarrhoea, continue to take these bland fluids plus milk.

After 48 hours

From 48 hours after the last diarrhoea you may take light solids, but avoid fruit and vegetables for
3–4 days.

After 72 hours

If you are well, you can start to eat normally again.

Call or return to your GP if:

You still feel unwell.

You start to be sick again.

You start to have diarrhoea again.
