Information about painkillers, for your child, that you can buy over the counter.
Pain Relief
If your child is in pain or has a fever, we recommend that you give them medicines such as junior paracetamol or ibuprofen. These are available from chemists.
Dosages
Ibuprofen
(Junifen)
Less than 1 year – on medical advice only
1–2 years – 2.5 ml, 3–4 times a day
3–7 years – 5 ml, 3–4 times a day
8–12 years – 10 ml, 3–4 times a day
Paracetamol
(Calpol)
Less than 6 months – on medical advice only
6–24 months – 120 mg every 4–6 hours (maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours)
2–4 years – 180 mg every 4–6 hours (maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours)
4–6 years – 240 mg every 4–6 hours (maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours)
Please Remember:
Do not give aspirin or codeine or any medicines that contain them to children under 12 years old without medical advice.
If you are not sure about any doses, ask your chemist.
If your child is not responding to these medications, please seek further medical advice.
