You have been treated with a Repeat Prescription. You have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid your recovery.
Managing Your Repeat Medications
What will happen when I arrive at the Urgent Treatment Centre or Walk-In Centre?
When you arrive, you will be assessed to find out what your needs are. If your condition is urgent and requires immediate attention you will be seen by an appropriate clinician.
If you do not require urgent medical attention and are purely in need of your regular repeat medicines, we will refer you on to a relevant person or service who can help.
The UTC/WIC does not routinely issue repeat medicines and so the staff will direct you to your GP surgery, NHS 111 or to a local pharmacy.
How can I get an emergency supply of my medicines?
You may be able to get your medicine or a prescription in one of the following ways:
- From your GP
- Ask a local pharmacist if they can provide an emergency supply of your medicine. There may be a charge for this as supplying in an emergency is not funded by the NHS.
- Call NHS 111 to discuss your situation and, if appropriate, they will put in you in contact with a local pharmacy who can provide an emergency supply for the cost of an NHS prescription.
In exceptional circumstances where the need for medication is urgent and cannot be sourced elsewhere a UTC/WIC clinician may be able to issue a short emergency supply.
Emergency supply of repeat medicine from your GP
If you cannot collect your prescription from your GP surgery, an emergency supply of prescription-only medicine may be made to a pharmacy, at the request of a prescriber at your GP surgery.
The pharmacist needs to be satisfied that the prescription is from a prescriber and that the prescriber is unable to provide a prescription immediately; for example the patient cannot collect the prescription from the prescriber and urgently needs the medicine(s).
You should contact your GP surgery who will liaise with the pharmacy to organise this type of prescription. The GP surgery will then need to provide the paper copy of the prescription to the pharmacy within 72 hours (eg, this can be done by posting it).
Emergency supply of repeat medicine from a pharmacy
To receive this emergency supply, you must have been prescribed the medicine before by a doctor, dentist or other healthcare professional that is registered in the UK.
The pharmacist must:
- Usually see you face-to-face.
- Agree that you need the medicine immediately
- Be satisfied with the dose you have been prescribed before.
Many commonly used controlled medicines such as morphine or diamorphine can’t be supplied without a prescription by a pharmacist in an emergency.
Visitors to the UK
If you are a visitor to the UK, you can get an emergency supply from a pharmacist:
- If there is evidence that a doctor or dentist registered in a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland has prescribed the medicine for you before, and the dosage at which this was prescribed.
- At the request of a doctor or dentist registered in the EEA or Switzerland.
- If you have a valid prescription from a doctor or dentist registered in the EEA or Switzerland.
This arrangement is not applicable to medicines prescribed by other EEA or Swiss healthcare professionals, (eg, nurses) and it does not apply to all medicines. For example, pharmacists can’t provide an emergency supply of:
- Controlled medicines
- Medicines that do not have a UK marketing authorisation.
The pharmacist may not be able to provide an emergency supply of medication if the prescription is written in a language they cannot understand.
It is illegal for pharmacists to supply medicines based on prescriptions issued outside the UK, the EEA or Switzerland. This includes prescriptions issued by doctors in the US and Canada. Please ask to be directed to a private clinic.
How to seek further medical advice
If you have concerns that your, or your child’s, condition is worsening (or not improving in the way that would be expected) you should seek medical advice as follows:
- In normal opening hours please contact your own registered GP practice.
- Outside your GP’s opening hours you should phone 111 who will advise you what steps you need to take next.
- If you are unable to get advice from the above and you, or your child has urgent concerns you could re-attend the Urgent Treatment Centre you visited today. If this is not an option you could attend your nearest hospital Emergency Department (A&E).
If you have concerns that you or the patient you are caring for has a potentially life-threatening illness or injury you should call 999.
