Why scan for a deep vein thrombosis?
A Doppler ultrasound scan can be used to detect a clot (thrombosis) in the deep vein of your leg.
Where do I go?
Please report to reception desk of X-ray 2 at the Haywood Hospital.
Who will I see?
You will be seen by a sonographer, who performs and interprets the scan of your veins.
How do I prepare for the test?
No preparation is required for the test.
What does the test involve?
You may need to remove some clothing from your legs and lie on a couch. The sonographer puts gel on both sides of your leg(s) and then scans the area with a small probe. The sonographer may take some pictures during the scan. The test takes up to 20 minutes and is a safe, non-invasive and painless way of checking for a DVT.
What happens next?
The sonographer writes a report of the scan result and will ask you to return to the DVT Clinic at the Haywood Walk-in Centre for assessment. If the scan is negative, you may be asked to return for a repeat of the scan in a few days. If you have any questions please ask the DVT Clinic Nurse.
What is a DVT?
A DVT is a blood clot (or thrombus) which forms in a vein. DVT stands for Deep Vein Thrombosis. The most common place for DVT is in the leg.
How will my DVT be diagnosed?
- Symptom assessment
- Dimer blood test
- Leg Doppler (scan)
How will I be treated for the DVT?
Once you have been diagnosed with a DVT you will be given medication to thin your blood. This will include heparin (an injection) to start with, then warfarin (a tablet).
Is there anything I can do to help myself?
It is very important that you attend all appointments. Do not miss any. It is also important that you take your medication as instructed. If you are unsure about this, please ask.
Should I put anything on the leg?
Apply a moisturiser each day to keep the skin supple.
Should I exercise?
Gentle exercise such as short walks will be helpful as long as the leg is not too painful. You should avoid standing for too long in one position. Care needs to be taken if the activity could cause bumps, knocks or grazes as the medication can increase risk of bruising.
Should I raise my legs when sitting?
Yes, always try to raise your legs while sitting. Try to move your ankles and bend your knees at least once an hour. If you have compression stockings, please wear them.
Can I drive?
Once the pain has gone you should be able to drive again. If you are in pain you may not be able to use the foot pedals properly. This could be very dangerous.
Can I go on holiday?
This depends on where you are going and how you are getting there. Please discuss this with the pharmacist in the clinic and your own doctor.
