Viral Illness (Child).

Your child has a Viral Illness. They have been thoroughly examined and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following will aid their recovery.

Care Instructions for Viral illnesses

What is a viral illness ?

A general non-specific illness caused by a virus which can affect any of the bodies systems. The symptoms can vary depending on the virus.

There may be a combination of symptoms:

Raised temperature.
Snuffly nose and cough.
Diarrhoea and or vomiting.
Blotchy red rash which may last a few days.

Treatment

Antibiotics are not required. Give regular paracetamol as directed on the bottle. Encourage your child to keep drinking but do not worry if their appetite does not return to normal for a few days.

When to seek further help

When your child:

Refuses or is unable to drink.
Shows no improvement.
Becomes more sleepy or irritable than usual.
Has diarrhoea that continues for more than 7 days or has blood in it.

Who to contact

If you have any further concerns within the next 24 hours contact your nearest Emergency Department.

After this time you should contact your own GP.
