Caring for your Childs Coughs and Colds

Why do young children get so many coughs and colds?

Because many viruses cause children to have coughs and colds. There are over 200 different viruses. If your child has not met a virus before then they are likely to become infected and ill.

How many coughs and colds does the average young child have in a year?

The average number of coughs and colds is about eight. Some may get more some may get less.

Why does my child get so many more infections than I do?

Because you developed your immunity when you were young. Your mother was probably as worried as you are now. Your child is building their immunity.

How much longer is my child going to continue getting infections?

The pre-school years are the worst. The frequency of infections will gradually get less as your child grows and builds up immunity and starts meeting viruses they have been infected by before. As your child gets bigger and stronger, they are better able to deal with the infection.

Is my child weakened by the coughs and colds?

Your child is weaker while they have the cough and cold. The good part is that this infection is giving your child immunity to that virus. This means that when your child next meets that virus they will not be infected.

However remember there are over 200 other viruses.

When should I take my child with a cough and cold to see a doctor?

There are three important things to look for.

They are your child’s:

Behaviour- It is normal for a child with a cold not to eat and to lack energy. See a doctor promptly if your child stops drinking or walking about.

Breathing– See a doctor promptly if your child has difficulty breathing – look at the ribs.

Temperature- See a doctor if your child’s temperature is over 39 degrees.
