You have been treated for a rib or chest injury. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Following this type of injury, it is important to relieve the pain and prevent any chest infection. We therefore recommend that you take painkillers, eg, paracetamol or ibuprofen regularly for a couple of days.
Practise deep breathing exercises – every time you think of it, take a deep breath. You may find it helpful to support the affected area with your hand. Also, if you want to cough, you may find it useful to support the affected area in this way.
We strongly advise against smoking. Why not take this opportunity to stop. Contact your GP’s surgery about a ‘Smoke Stop’ course.
Chest injuries should never be strapped as this prevents good inflation of the lungs and can lead to chest infection.
Remember the affected area will probably become more uncomfortable after a few days following the injury, as the bruising appears.
You may find it helpful to sleep on a couple of extra pillows and to sit well supported on a comfortable chair rather than lie down on the sofa.
If you should develop a high temperature or shortness of breath, you should seek medical advice from your GP.
