How will I know if my child is in pain?
The best way of finding out if your child is in pain is to ask if they hurt. It is worth remembering that your child may be in pain even when playing or when watching television.
What can I give my child at home for pain?
The most commonly used pain relief medicines are paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Either of these pain relievers can be given in liquid form by mouth.
Junior paracetamol can be given every 4 hours up to four times a day at the dose given on the bottle for your child’s age. Ibuprofen can also be given every four hours up to 4 times a day at the dose given on the bottle for your child’s age.
These medicines can be bought over the counter at any chemist. You can also get advice from the pharmacist about the wide range of analgesia available for children, various flavours, colours, etc.
For persistent pain, give alternate doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen every 3 hours, being careful not to exceed the daily dose given on the bottle for either.
For example:
7 am paracetamol
10 am ibuprofen
1 pm paracetamol
4 pm ibuprofen … and so on …
When should I worry about my child’s pain?
- If you have given the full dose of the medicines and your child is still in pain
- If your child complains that the pain is getting worse
- If the pain persists
