You have been treated for an infection of the white part of the eye. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Conjunctivitis is an infection of the white part of the eye. It is not serious, but can be contagious; ensure that you use your own flannel, soap and towel. Wash your hands before and after instilling your eye drops. If the infection spreads to the other eye, use the drops in that eye as well. If the eyes are sticky, bathe them with cool water which has been boiled.
Do not use the drops on anyone else, only use the eye drops you have been provided with.
The infection should resolve within 1–2 weeks. If it does not do so, please ring your GP for further advice.
Note that it is safe practice to use separate eye drops for each eye.
Once the infection has cleared up, the tube or bottle should be discarded and not kept for further use.
