You have been treated for an injury to the ligaments in your shoulder. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
- The injury is to the ligaments which hold the end of your collar bone to your shoulder joint
- You may have a lump where the collar bone meets the shoulder, this is normal following this injury, and may or may not resolve as the injury heals
- Rest in a sling for 10 days to 2 weeks
- Regularly take your arm out of the sling to move the elbow and wrist
- Take regular analgesia and/or anti-inflammatory medication
- Try to avoid lying on the injured side
- You can use ice packs (a pack of frozen peas wrapped in a damp tea towel) for 10 minutes, 3 times a day to help reduce the pain and inflammation
- It is quite common to feel pain for up to 12 weeks, particularly if lying on it
Basic exercises
- Stand up and lean forward, letting your injured arm hang loosely. Swing your arm in small circles, backwards and forwards, or side to side
- Hold your hands together and use your good arm to help lift your bad arm up as high as you can
- Shrug your shoulders up and down.
Repeat each exercise about 10 times, and perform 3 times a day.
It is important to exercise regularly, even if it is painful.
- If you still have significant pain or restriction in movement after 10 days, you may require some physiotherapy.
- Physiotherapy can be arranged through your GP
