You have been treated with a IROM Brace. The following information will help you use it correctly.
How to Manage Your IROM (Incremental Range Of Movement) Brace
- An IROM brace immobilises and controls the amount of movement at your knee
- The amount you are able to bend or straighten your knee may have been restricted by your consultant in order to protect stitches in your knee whilst they heal
- It is important that you do not change the movement range that your brace has been set at unless you have been told to by your consultant or physiotherapist
When to wear the brace
- Depending on the reason you are wearing the brace, you may have been told that you must keep the brace on at all times, including overnight or in some circumstances you may be allowed to remove the brace overnight when you are in bed
- You should remove the brace daily to check your skin and clean the parts of your leg that are not covered by bandages or dressings
- You are not allowed to shower or bath when the brace is on, if you have been told that you should wear the brace at all times, you will only be able to strip-wash and remove the brace briefly to allow you to wash your leg
To remove the brace
Start with the straps closest to your knee and hook the straps one by one until you have access to your leg to wash or remove the brace if allowed.
To reapply the brace
Make sure that it is the correct way up the lock symbol should be at the top closest to you, the dials on either side should be in line with your knee joint
Then attach the straps one by one starting with the straps closest to your knee
Once fitted, check the position of the brace:
- The dial should be in line with your knee joint
- The bars of the brace should run along the sides of your leg
- The strap should be tight enough to keep your brace in place but allow one finger to fit under the strap
-If you have had some dressings removed or swelling in your knee has gone down you may find that the brace becomes loose, to tighten the brace straps:
- Lift the velcro tab attached to the strap from the inside of the leg and pull to tighten then replace the velcro back onto the inside of the leg
- Repeat this for each strap but ensure that there is still space for one finger to fit beneath each strap
If you experience any pain swelling or sensation changes make sure that the brace is not too tight and seek medical advice.
If you have any problems with the brace, please do not hesitate to contact the ward or clinic where your brace was given to you and discuss this with a nurse or physiotherapist in the Emergency Unit 029 2074 8036
