We have been treated with a Air Cast Boot. The following information will help you use them correctly.
How to Manage Your Air Cast Boot
- An air cast boot is used to protect an injury or surgical site on your foot or ankle
- An air cast boot will allow you to walk on your injured leg and will provide you with some protection
When to wear the boot
- You may have been told that you cannot remove the boot and must wear it at all times like a cast
- In other circumstances, you may have been told that you can remove the boot overnight whilst in bed. This will depend upon the type of injury that you have
- You should not walk without the boot as this may cause further damage
Washing and skincare
- The boot cannot be worn in a shower or bath
- It is advisable to strip wash whilst wearing the boot and remove the boot while seated or lying. Check your skin for pressure areas or marks and to clean the parts of your foot and leg that are not covered by dressings
Removing the Boot
- Release the air from the ankle pockets (hold grey buttons down)
- Undo the three Velcro straps on the outside of the boot
- Then remove the plastic front undo the Velcro on the shin and foot flaps
- You can now wash and check your skin and remove the boot.
If you are allowed to reapply the boot
- Make sure that the heel is all the way back in the boot
- Do up the Velcro on the foot and leg flaps
- Place the plastic cover over the front and do up the three velcro straps
- Re-inflate the air into the ankle pockets (pump the blue buttons on the sides of the boot simultaneously to the advised level)
- Ensure that the straps are secured correctly and that the front shell is correctly positioned
You may have been instructed to use the pump mechanism on the side of the boot to pump up the boot. Remove the cap on the side of the boot and press the pump until you feel light pressure around your ankle then repeat this on the other side.
Release the air before you remove the boot:
- Remove the cap from the valve and press the valve
- Again repeat this on the other side
You may have been given a set of wedges to insert in the boot, these fit underneath the liner of the boot. Follow the guidance given by a consultant or physiotherapist on when to remove or add the wedges.
If you experience any pain swelling or sensation changes make sure that the boot is not on too tight and seek medical advice.
