Initially the cast applied will normally be a back slab. This means it will cover either the top or bottom part of the limb to allow for any initial swelling.

This cast will normally be changed for a full light weight cast when you attend the Fracture Clinic.

Do

Elevate the limb as much as possible whilst it is swollen
Exercise all joints not in the cast as much as possible
Return for your clinic appointment when requested
Take regular simple painkillers
Remove your sling at night if you have been supplied with one and carry on with elevation

Do not

Get your plaster wet as it will not reset but go soft
Walk on your cast unless you have been told to do so. It will damage the cast
Take the cast off yourself. Always come back to hospital
Push objects down the cast as these can cause sores

You should contact the hospital if any of the following occur and are not relieved by strict elevation for an hour:

If you are experiencing severe or increasing pain
Excessive swelling beyond the plaster
Changing colour especially a blue colour of the fingers or toes (do not be confused by the bruising, but if in doubt check with the hospital)
Increasing pain on moving your fingers or toes
Any unusual smell, discharge or wetness from inside the plaster
