Burns Injury.

This leaflet contains advice to help you look after your burn and allow it to heal with the least problems possible. It also suggests some first aid treatment for burns in case it should ever happen again.

Burns Injury

This leaflet contains advice to help you look after your burn and allow it to heal with the least problems possible. It also suggests some first aid treatment for burns in case it should ever happen again.

Burns cause swelling and swelling causes stiffness. Keep the injured limb elevated. Take regular painkillers. In burns of the hand, try to keep your fingers moving.

Your dressing

Some burns don’t require dressing but when they do the dressing should remain undisturbed until you are next seen, unless any of the following happen:

Fluid seeps through the dressing
You accidentally get it wet
You experience increasing pain

You should also seek advice from the Emergency Department, walk-in centre or GP Practice Nurse if:

The wound becomes more painful, red or smelly, or if there is a discharge
You feel ill or develop a temperature
A child with a burn goes off his or her food

Tetanus

If you are unsure regarding your tetanus status, please contact your GP.

First aid for burns

If you are unlucky enough to suffer another burn in the future. This is what you should do:

Immediately cool the affected part with water. Use a basin or bath or towels soaked in cold water, changing them regularly
Continue to cool for at least fifteen minutes
Take simple painkillers such as paracetamol
Once the burn feels cool wrap it in cling film and seek medical help
Don’t apply any creams as these make it harder for the doctor to examine the burn and may make it more painful
