Antibiotics and the Pill.

Antibiotics and the Pill

The doctor who has seen you has advised you that you need a course of antibiotics because of an infection. Antibiotics can interfere with the way oral contraceptive pills work. This means that you might not be protected from pregnancy, even if you continue taking the pill regularly, while you are on the antibiotics. Interference goes on for about a week after the antibiotics are finished.

If the pill is the method of contraception you use, you need to take additional precautions while you are on the antibiotics and for 7 days after they are finished. This means condoms or a cap, with spermicide, as well as continuing to take the pill.

If this means you are still using additional contraception in the pill-free week (or in the week of inactive tablets with ‘everyday’ preparations) you need to begin immediately with a new packet of active tablets and continue taking them until the next pill-free week. Because you have not had the usual break in active pills, you may not see your usual monthly period. This is not harmful.

If you miss the second period, when you are back in the usual routine of tablets and off the antibiotics altogether, then you should consult your GP or go to the Family Planning Clinic.
