You have been treated for a fracture of the 5th Metacarpal. You have had a thorough examination and are now considered fit to be discharged. The following instructions will aid your recovery.
Symptoms
The pain, tenderness and swelling you are experiencing should gradually settle over several weeks. You will find it difficult to grip during this time due to pain and should avoid heavy lifting or impact.
Recommended treatment
You will be provided with a splint or strapping to hold the little and ring fingers together while the bone is healing.
You should gradually discard the splint/strapping over 2–4 weeks. You should use your hand for light tasks as pain allows. Only begin heavier tasks or impact activities when the pain has almost fully settled (4–6 weeks usually).
Recovery time
Most injuries heal without any problems. However, it may take 6–8 weeks for your symptoms to settle completely.
The injury
Commonly called a ‘Boxer’s Fracture’, you have a fractured bone in your hand at the base of the little finger. This has occurred in a part of the bone that normally heals without a problem.
Complications
It is normal for the little finger knuckle to be less prominent after this injury or for there to be a bump where the fracture healed, which do not require treatment.
Occasionally the fracture may displace, or fail to heal, and continue to be painful. At this stage a surgical procedure may be required.
